Self Preservation

SHOWING AT THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART LAGOS (MOCA LAGOS) FROM THE 22ND OF JUNE - 30TH OF AUGUST, 2019

" The wake of loss has a way of tranquilizing grief with the pressing demands of practical arrangements - a tranquilizer we take willingly, almost gratefully " - Excerpt from Maria Popova's FIGURING

------

This is a body of work that has come to life by way of an accident that didn't really need to happen more than once, the collages are made from water-damaged pieces of my sketch books and journals which date to the last 4-5 years.

It's an attempt to reconstruct the pieces in an abstraction that I hope can hold meaning to the fading words and lines contained in these books. The thematic pale blue and pink, a result of this accident, makes me think of the colours associated with new borns, therefore alluding to a phase of birth or rebirth. This rebirth not outside of me, as I currently face the trying experience of redefining my identity in terms of my work and my relationships. I am washed steadily into a muddle of unrecognisable parts, with my general sense of control continually being challenged and shifting. All the established definitions  pushing into each other and into indefinition, and all of my will being crushed into soft pale hues. It's beautiful to know that I am changing, and to be reminded of what it felt like in the beginning, at the same time painful to lose the comfort of the steady and the familiar. How do we carry ourselves back to our new starts and how do we know to let go? How can we be assured that it will be alright? And with what confidence did we come into this world, young, unknowing, irregular, untainted, soft and indefinite?

Self Preservation for me is hope.
